At
the first of this year, we made the transition of our newsletter
from paper to electronic. While
the first two issues went smoothly, we have hit a road bump with the
March through May issues. We
have posted the March Pocket Scope and have published the April and
May in HTML format. I
would like to apologize for any inconvenience that this may have
caused.
With corporate America in a
constant flux (right-sizing/downsizing), we find the constant need
to search for volunteers. As
all of you are aware, the IEEE is a volunteer organization.
We are searching for individuals that would be interested in
any capacity within the Houston Section and specifically a person
that is willing to assume the duties of Pocket Scope Editor.
We are also interested in finding other individuals to fill
officer positions within our Technical Society Chapters (i.e. Power
Engineering, Computer, Communication & Industry Applications). Now, not all of you members of the Houston Section run out
and volunteer right away or my e-mail will lockup.
We need a little humor with this subject, but seriously, we
need YOUR help. Please
take the time to consider volunteering in some capacity.
The return on time invested is well worth it.
Our
employment section on the IEEE Houston Section website is growing.
Take the time to visit the site and forward the information
on to individuals within your companies that are seeking IEEE
engineers (View
Employment Opportunities).
Again, this feature is a service for the IEEE membership
within the Houston Section and is at no cost to the individuals or
companies placing the basic ads.
We
are working on planning an Industry Luncheon at the end of 2001.
We have invited several of our IEEE Corporate Officers to
attend this meeting to discuss the value of being an IEEE member and
specifically the value to a company for such membership.
If you are interested in having executives within your
company invited to this luncheon, please forward the Houston
Section ExCom the individuals name and contact information.
At
the recent Region 5 Conference, the Houston Section was tasked with
forming a Gold Chapter. What
is a Gold Chapter? It
is a group of individuals that are, what is termed, "recent
engineering graduates". Recent is within the last ten years. Therefore, we are looking for individuals that meet these
criteria and that are interested in helping form this group.
Please contact Gil
Dolor or Raul Olivas.
The
Offshore Technology Conference was held April 30 to May 3, 2001.
I would like to thank John Lucey and all of the volunteers
that took time away from their schedules to staff the IEEE booths at
the conference. The
IEEE is one of 11 founding members of this internationally attended
conference. We would
like to see others help in upcoming years.
Our
next section meeting will be held on September 27, 2001.
I look forward to meeting you and discussing any topic of
interest. As always,
the Houston
Section ExCom
is interested in your feedback and comments.
If you have suggestions and/or are interested in becoming active
within the section or a local society chapter, please contact one of
us.
