At the first on this year, we added the employment section to the IEEE Houston Section website. We have three categories for the ads that are free of charge for the basic listing. The categories are 1) Companies seeking engineers, 2) Employment agencies and. of course, 3) Engineers looking for job opportunities. Currently we have 3 companies, 4 employment agencies and 2 fellow engineers listed on the website http://www.ieee-houston.org/. We have added this feature to the website after numerous requests for local employment listings. Please take the time to review this new feature and make comments or suggestions.  As always, the Houston Section Excom is trying to add value to your membership.

I am still looking for feedback from the questions that were posed in the March Pocket Scope. The following is an excerpt of the text. "Marco W. Migliaro, the current SA President hosted the discussion. The basic question posed to the group was "What can the SA and/or IEEE do for the member and/or his company". Many thoughts come to mind when presented with this question. It has very different answers depending on what section of industry you are working (end user, manufacturer, engineering firm etc.).

My thoughts on the question:

1 EEEThe IEEE in general and specifically the IEEE SA need to provide an avenue for feedback to the individual's employer to show the value added in participating in IEEE activities
2 The IEEE SA needs to leverage the global membership base of the IEEE and its 365,000 members to promote the IEEE consensus standards as being equal to the IEC standards, thus having a level playing field in the harmonization process of IEEE and IEC standards.
3 The IEEE needs to further expand the Corporate Relations project to proactively meet with corporate executives to disseminate the value of IEEE membership.

I would like to here what the Houston Section members thoughts are on the same question and pass your comments on to Marco. Please respond back at donald.dunn@ieee.org."

The speaker for or April meeting will be Dr. Jonathan Coopersmith. His presentation will be on "Pornography on the Internet". Dr. Coopersmith is an Associate Professor of History at Texas A&M University, where he has taught since 1988. Currently he is writing a history of the fax machine from its origins in the 1840s to the present. His first book, The Electrification of Russia, 18801926, was published by Cornell University Press. He received his D.Phil from Oxford University in 1985 and his B.A. from Princeton University in 1978.

The Offshore Technology Conference will be April 30 to May 3, 2001 for more information see the website: http://www.spe.org/cda/2001_otc_front_door/1,1240,3325,00.html
Again this year the Houston Section Excom is seeking volunteers to help man the IEEE both at the conference. If you can help please contact John Lucey at john-lucey@reliantenergy.com

The Executive Committee is interested in your feedback and comments. If you have suggestions and/or are interested in becoming active within the section or a local society chapter, please contact one of us.
