APRIL
SECTION MEETING
-------------------------------
Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaos,
and the Human Brain |
The brain generates
measurable electrical activity. We will discuss
how techniques derived from nonlinear dynamics
and chaos theory can be used to analyze these
signals, and to extract Diagnostic
information. This talk will not require any math
beyond Calculus 1, but may act as a sedative and
could amplify the effect of your allergy
medication. Please consult your personal
physician. |
| BIOGRAPHY---------------------------------------------------- |
Dr. Ben H. Jansen is a
Professor in the Department of Electrical
Computer Engineering at the University of
Houston. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees
in electrical engineering from Twente Technical
University, in Enschede, the Netherlands, and his
Ph.D. in medical informatics from the Free
University, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He moved
to Vanderbilt University in 1980, where he was a
Research Assistant Professor in Electrical and
Biomedical Engineering. Since 1982, he has been
with the University of Houston, where he teaches
courses in digital signal processing, pattern
recognition, and related topics. Dr. Jansen's
research has focussed on developing tools for the
quantitative analysis of the electrical activity
of the brain (electroencephalogram or EEG). |
| Chairman's Message

Ken Mercado
Spring is in, the air, azaleas are
'blooming, grass is growing and we all
realize that the year is moving along at
a rapid pace. I would like to stop for a
moment and recognize all of you
who are our local members for the
contributions made to improve our role as
Engineers in the Houston area. If you
have or if you know of someone who has
made outstanding accomplishments in our
field in the past year, please contact me
and I will presents the candidate to IEEE
National for possible recognition
opportunities. Achievements can come from
professional, educational or student
activities in your field. You cannot be
recognized if don't apply, so call me for
