February 2000

Communications Society Activities

W. Ransom Silber, P.E.,
Shell Services International

2000 should be a great year to explore emerging communications technologies and our lunchtime meetings will give you an opportunity to survey these technologies and exchange ideas with fellow engineers.  Whether you are engaged in communications engineering full time or just need to know how it affects your specialty, we welcome you to join us.

While the vast majority of our programs address emerging communications technology and its applications, at our January meeting we looked back at a key invention that made long distance communication possible – the vacuum tube.  We thought the first meeting of the year 2000 would be an appropriate time to reflect on one of the key electronic devices developed early in the 20th Century.  Programs being developed for our future meetings will include such topics as the US conversion to digital television transmission, updates on space communications, and packetized voice in the public telephone network.  Our program for the March meeting is still being finalized, but the date will be Thursday, March 9, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

Details are available at our Houston ComSoc Web site: http://www.comsoc.org/socstr/chptrs/houston/.

Our officers for this year are:
