Is Teamwork a Strategic Advantage for Your Leadership Team? The session would focus on how a team can more consistently deliver on business objectives, make better business decisions and gain an advantage from working together effectively. The session will focus on:     
   *Common myths about teamwork
   *The key teamwork competencies that can drive a team to achieve a strategic advantage
   *Teamwork behaviors and processes that can differentiate the value that the team delivers
   *Next steps – to make teamwork an advantage
 
  Speaker: Michael R. Goodfriend is President and Founder of Goodfriend & Associates, Inc., a management consulting firm.  Since 1989, Mike has served clients in diverse industries – oil and gas, manufacturing, healthcare, industrial distribution, multi-chain restaurants, information technology and professional service firms.  Prior to founding Goodfriend & Associates, Inc., Mike was an audit manager and human resources manager for Price Waterhouse.  Mike received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the Pennsylvania State University.  He currently chairs the Birkman Method User Group in Houston.  He has previously served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Texas and the Houston CPA Society.

Patent Law; The Recent Changes - There have been sweeping changes in patent law recently enacted under the America Invents Act, and it will benefit IEEE members to be informed of the new provisions, particularly as to how it affects inventors and business managers.  The presentation will cover the basics of the patent system, including the substantial new changes to the U.S. patent law created under the America Invents Act---for the inventor, engineer, and business manager.
  Speaker: Brett Cooke is a Patent Attorney with Andrews Kurth LLP in Houston, Texas.  He earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the University of Houston Law Center (2006) and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M (1991)  (specializing in analog VLSI technology).  Before practicing law, Brett worked as an Area Sales Manager for the Electronics Division of Raychem (later Tyco Electronics) (manufacturer of splicing devices, heat shrink tubing, gels and wire and cable), as a Product and Sales Manager for Amercable (manufacturer of industrial, automotive and telecom wire and cable), and as a Patent Agent for Andrews Kurth.  Brett has served 21 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, with 7 years active duty as a nuclear power qualified surface warfare officer, and he holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Grassroots Legislative Issues and IEEE-USA Interaction

 
  Speaker:  Russell T. Harrison is IEEE-USA's Senior Legislative Representative for Grassroots Activities. In this position, he is responsible for helping members of IEEE-USA interact with, and ultimately influence, elected officials. Prior to IEEE-USA, Russell directed grassroots programs at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries and the American Iron and Steel Institute. In these positions he also raised over $300,000 in campaign contributions through the associations' political action committees. He has also represented the recycling and steel industries on Capitol Hill and in state capitols on a variety of issues as a professional lobbyist. Russell has a B.A. in Political Science, with minors in History and Communication, from Allegheny College, and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Maryland.
