The Region 5 Technical and Leadership Conference was held in Denver, Colorado April 7 – 10, 2005 and provided a great opportunity to network with the Section Leadership from the other 23 Sections in the Region and the full Region 5 leadership team. I think the best part of the conference was observing the student competitions within the Robotics Contest in which several universities sent teams to compete. LSU took home top honors, but I believe that all were winners just by their competing in this most challenging event. In addition, several awards were presented at the Region 5 Conference and I am pleased to announce that the Houston Section won the best Section Website award. A special thanks and congratulations to Mr. Dwayne Lowry for his very loyal support of the IEEE-Houston Section through the years in both being a past Chair and EXCOM member, but especially for his untiring work in support of the Section in being our webmaster. This is his award and I would like to say a sincere “Thank You, Mr. Lowry for making the Houston Section look so good in the eyes of so many of our peers and for setting the standard for Section websites within IEEE Region 5”. May looks to be a busy month. The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) will be on May 2-5 at the Reliant Center. The Houston Section will be manning two (2) booths, so be sure to drop by and say hello. Last, but not least, our next EXCOM meeting will be Thursday, May 26th at the Hess building and this will be our last EXCOM meeting until the end of summer. Make sure to visit the IEEE Houston Section website for more details. We hope to see you at these events. Remember that your Executive Committee always looks forward to your feedback and comments. We are here to serve you and ensure that the programs and content of IEEE bring the most value. If you have suggestions and/or are interested in becoming active within the section or a local society chapter, contact one of the EXCOM members. Scott Ballew |
