On behalf of the section, I want to extend our congratulations to Caroline Smith and Gaurab Chakrabarti, First Place Winner and Runner-up, respectively, at this year’s Science Fair. Caroline’s project was titled, “The diligence of filaments II: A study of filament life as a function of input voltage.” Gaurab’s project was based on the nature of sound-heat energy transference in pipelines and similar structures. Shannon Quadros, our Science Fair coordinator, said these projects were very interesting and well-deserving. Great job, Caroline and Gaurab!

Just a reminder, the IEEE Houston Section is awarding Education Scholarships. In order to promote the interests of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - Houston Section, and in support of its dedication to Engineering and Science, scholarships will be awarded annually to selected applicants. This is our second year to award college scholarships, and, due to the success of the 2003 IEEE - Houston Section Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, up to three (3) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year. The deadline for applications is July 3, 2004 and both incoming freshman and returning students are eligible. Visit the website for more information (http://www.ieee-houston.org/).

The Executive Committee would like to personally thank Dr. Peri Ktonas for his many contributions to IEEE. Peri has been a very active and dedicated IEEE member for more than twenty (20) years and has done an outstanding job leading the EMBS. We will miss him dearly. We are throwing Peri a bon voyage dinner. Please make sure to say your goodbyes to Peri before he leaves for Greece.

If you are interested in getting involved in the local IEEE section, let us know, volunteers are always needed. It is a great way to network with professionals within the electrical engineering community. With approximately 4300 members, we are one of the larger sections within IEEE. Join us at one of the upcoming meetings, we look forward to meeting you.

As always, your Executive Committee looks forward to your feedback and comments. We are here to serve you and ensure that the programs and content of IEEE provide the most value. If you have suggestions and/or are interested in becoming active within the section or a local society chapter, contact one of us
