First, on behalf of the Executive
Committee, I want to extend our congratulations to Alex Dunn and Hari P.
Kewalramani, members of the Houston Section who were recently elected to the
IEEE Senior Member Grade. One of the goals of the Houston Section is to have
all Excom members at this level. In light of that, the Excom is looking at
implementing a program which encourages, and makes it easy for Senior Member
candidates complete the process. The Central Texas Section has used a process
that has been very successful. The Dallas Section has also implemented this
process with similar results. If you meet the qualifications, the Excom will
help you achieve Senior Member status. Contact one of the Excom members for
more information in upgrading your membership.
Only weeks away our first Section
meeting for 2004 will be held at the HESS Building on Thursday, February 26th.
Dr. Albert Cheng will give a presentation titled “Formal Analysis and
Verification of Embedded and Real-Time Systems.” His presentation deals with
the use of practical formal analysis and verification techniques to ensure that
the implemented systems perform as required. It should be an interesting and
informative session.
Looking further ahead, the Houston
Section will be manning booths at the OTC-May 2004 Conferences this year
promoting IEEE. We need volunteers to help us man these booths and promote
IEEE. If you are interested, please contact one of the Excom members. We are
always interested in new volunteers as the IEEE is a volunteer organization.
Several people have contacted Excom officers and a few have attended the monthly
Excom meetings. If you are interested in becoming active, please take the time
to consider volunteering in some capacity. The Houston Section has vast
opportunities for you to consider. I urge you to visit the Houston Section
website, look at the local society chapters as well as the Section and see if
your interests lie in any of these areas
The Houston Section has a worldwide
renowned Continuing Education Seminar with presentations every month. The next
seminar will be February 3-4 on Synchronous Motors. Presenters will be Chris
Charter (GE Canada) and Mike Costello (Chevron Texaco). Full details are on the
website.
As always, the Executive Committee and
I look forward to your feedback and comments. If you have suggestions and/or
are interested in becoming active within the section or a local society chapter,
contact one of us. At the next Excom meeting, we will be reviewing the Houston
Section’s goals for 2004. Your active participation and feedback is most
welcome and very beneficial in ensuring that the programs and content of IEEE
brings the most value.
