August,  2003

For most of us summer vacations are over, school is getting back in session and, hopefully, jobs will become more plentiful and the stock market will continue to rise.  Good forecast for the coming fall.  And, with the coming fall will be our Fall meeting.

September 18 will feature Don Shafer who is a co-founder, corporate director and Chief Technology Officer of Athens Group, Inc. Incorporated.  The Athens Group is an employee-owned consulting firm, integrating technology strategy and software  solutions. Don will talk about software simulation and this proves to be a very interesting and informative evening.

Just another reminder to set aside October 17 to participate in our 2nd annual IEEE-Houston Golf Tournament.  Proceeds from the event will go to providing $1,000 scholarships to Section member sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc.  We were able to award 3 scholarships this year and look forward to increasing the number in 2004

Our three scholarship awards this year went to Haley Overton Wilson - Sr. Computer Science Major, Texas A&M; Allen Wan - Sr. EE Major, Rice University; and  Li Qi -  PhD Student EE, Texas A&M.  Congratulations to all of you.  And, we hope to have many more applicants for the awards next year so consider who would be viable candidates now.

Have you looked at all the benefits available to IEEE members on http://www.ieeeusa.org/.  Of special interest might be the "IEEE Financial Advantage".  A full list of member benefits can be found at http://www.ieee.org/memberbenefits.

We have two calls for papers.  The first is for students to participate in the annual Region 5 Technical Conference and Leadership Workshop to be held April 2-4 in Oklahoma City, OK.  See details elsewhere on the website.  The other "Call" is for the PCIC Technical Conference in San Francisco September 13-16, 2004.  Details are included in this PDF flyer

Click Here for an announcement and class schedule for University of Houston's Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Review Course. Classes start 8/26 and run through October; times are 7:15-9:15 PM. This course is offered before the next Texas state boards for engineers who wish to obtain the Professional Engineering license. The FE is the first test and must be passed before the actual Professional Engineering state boards can be taken. The next FE/EIT test is Saturday, Oct. 25.

The IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control will hold it's workshop in Houston at the Westin Galleria October 5-8, 2003.  Check out their excellent Tutorial Workshops.

Other Items of Interest:

  • IEEE JOURNALS RANK HIGH IN ANNUAL CITATION STUDY
Access to the latest technology is one of the benefits of IEEE membership. IEEE publishes the top eight journals in electrical and electronics engineering and the top seven journals in telecommunications, according to recently released results from the Institute for Scientific Information's annual Journal Citation Reports (2002 edition). The ISI study ranks journals by their impact factor -- the number of times their papers are quoted or cited by other scientific publications in their initial year of issue publication. You can view the report in more detail at http://www.ieee.org/citations.

  • Election Ballots Coming in September
Ballots for the annual election of an IEEE President-Elect and other officers will arrive in the mail in September. Find out more details at http://www.theinstitute.ieee.org/inst_art.jsp?isno=07031&arnumber=07031_7w.newselections§ion=41

  • HIGH TECH "BABBLE"? TEST YOURSELF!
An interesting article regarding the results of a survey done on technical jargon can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3054210.stm.
You can take the jargon quiz at http://www2.amd.com/us-en/gcab/lt/exam/1,,,00.html. We suspect that IEEE members would do better than the general population (3% of the 1500 people surveyed in the US, UK, China and Japan got a perfect score)
