December,  2002

The December 5, 2002 Section Meeting will be our last for this year.  Our speaker will be Rick Petersen a Senior Business Development Consultant for Intergraph Corporation and he will give a presentation on “Enter a New Era in Electrical Engineering”.

The Executive Committee of the Houston Section traveled to Washington D.C. representing our section at the 2002 Section Congress this past October.  Every three years the regional activities board (RAB) holds a conference for all sections within the IEEE.   Representatives from countries from around the world network and exchange ideals on section best practices.  Representatives attend training sessions, tutorials and panel discussions on section activities during the conference.  For more information about Section Congress 2002 visit the following website: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/sc/2002/index.html. The section Excom members had the opportunity to learn from section leadership throughout the world on section best practices.  We were also invited to conduct a tutorial in the membership development track on “Senior Member Elevations”.  The Houston Section lead Region 5 in 2001 with the largest number on new senior members.

Take a look at our website for information on a the following conference coming to Houston:  10th Annual IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop; Feb 4-7, 2003; Houston, Texas

If you have an interest or responsibility in electrical safety, mark you calendars and plan to register early for the 10th Annual IEEE Industry Applications Society Electrical Safety Workshop, February 4-7, 2003 at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston Texas.

Congratulations are extended to the following Houston Section Members who were elevated to senior members in November.  (Brian Cassidy, Paul J. Donner, Craig Fisher, Karolos Grigoriadis, Russ Gundrum, John M. Hemphill, Periklis Y. Ktonas, Reza Langari, Natarajan K. Seshan, and W. Ransom Siler)  We are looking for members that are interested in becoming a Senior Member in the IEEE.  If you meet the following criteria: for elevation to Senior Member status, ten years of professional practice including five years of significant performance, and references (See the nominator letter and application form for clarification on the IEEE website) or if you know an IEEE member who qualifies for Senior Membership, I would like you to nominate him or her by forwarding their nomination to one of the Houston Section Excom members. If you qualify and are not a senior member please reply to one of the Section Excom members.

The Executive Committee and I feel that the programs we have implemented are fostering positive growth in our membership base.  If you have feedback and comments contact one of the Excom members.  Our goal is to add value to your IEEE membership.  Thanks for taking the time to forward your feedback.
