December,  2001

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I want to extend our congratulations to three individuals from the Houston Section who were elected to the IEEE Grade of Fellow (Richard G. Baraniuk, Andrew Kwokshing Chan, and John Edwin Propst). As it stands today, the IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. A brief citation is issued to new Fellows describing their accomplishments and the total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth percent of the total voting Institute membership.

In addition, on behalf of the Executive Committee, I want to extend our congratulations to several individuals from the Houston Section who were elected to the IEEE Senior Member Grade (Hualou Liang, D. Wayne Madden, Daleep Mohla, Wissam Rabadi, Nicolaos B. Karayiannis, Jay R. Porter, and David Rice).

We had the privilege to have Mr. Ray Miller as our speaker for the December meeting. For those members that were unable to attend, I hope you have the opportunity to here Mr. Miller speak in the future. He covers diverse topics on Texas History that are very captivating and the subject covered at this months meeting was excellent.

The Houston Section CED program will be back in swing in February 2002 with several courses that cover new and exciting topics. Please take some time and visit the web site to see what will be offered this year.

The Houston Section will be manning booths at the SWEE and OTC Conferences this year promoting the IEEE. If you are interested in participating in these events and helping us promote the IEEE contact one of the Excom members.

Mark your calendars! The First Annual IEEE Houston Section Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held at the Greatwood Country Club in April of 2002. We have a couple of individuals that have graciously offered to help plan this event, but we are looking for more. We are also seeking corporate sponsorships; if your company is interested please email Dwayne Lowry or myself.

The Executive Committee and I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Holiday and a prosperous New Year. We are always looking for your feedback and comments. If you have suggestions and/or are interested in becoming active within the section or a local society chapter, contact one of us. Without the active participation and feedback from you the members, the programs and content of the IEEE would be lacking.
