Houston Section's Chair Message
by Charlie Pulay, 2010 Section Chair |
Greetings
- The Houston IEEE Executive committee wants to
thank you for your support and participation in
2009, and we welcome you to join us in 2010. I
personally want to thank the Executive Committee
especially Sam Terry, previous Chair, and Donald
Dunn for their dedication. I am appreciative of
the opportunity to lead the Houston IEEE Section
and will work to grow the organization.
Another year has come and gone and now we look forward
to the start of a new decade. The last decade
brought many technological advancements and the
disciplines of electrical and instrument
engineering gained in increasing importance
across many aspects of our society. Clean and
renewable energy and micro and power electronics
promise great new opportunities and will be
something to watch.
As impressive are the challenges of the worst economy
since the 1930's, and it is now hitting our
great state and our colleagues. Now, more than
ever, the IEEE / IAS network of professionals
can provide opportunities that can truly impact
our colleagues quality of life. We will work to
provide training and access to employment search
for our colleagues to regain employment.
Finally, I welcome your input for ways to make your
IEEE section a strong, vibrant community. We
plan to have many exciting speakers with some of
today's most current topics. We welcome your
input for presentation topics and/or activities.
Please see the IEEE calendar for meeting dates and we
look forward to seeing you soon. |

Final Message from
2009 Houston Section Chair, Sam Terry |
2009 has been
quite a year!! With all the financial woes of
the country it's a year that many will be happy
to put behind them. But in spite of it all the
IEEE Houston Section was quite active in 2009- a
Houston based IEEE 125th Anniversary
Celebration, members attendance of the IEEE-USA
Conference held in Salt Lake City and the IEEE
PCIC in Anaheim CA, support of the IEEE- IAS
National Conference held in Houston, Teacher in
Service technical training, Employment
seminars, support of numerous Regional committee
meetings, added 2 new technical Chapters, and we
have held over 160 separate Section,
Chapter, Society or Affinity Group technical
meetings. It has been a lot of hard work and an
honor to act as Chair for 2009.
I would like to thank all of the great team that helped
me throughout the year along with my best wishes
and support for the new team coming in for 2010.
And I would like to suggest to everyone that you
get more involved with IEEE. You get to meet and
work with some really wonderful and highly
talented people. I promise you will get far more
out of it than you put in! |

Volunteers Needed for Teacher
In-Service Workshop
The IEEE Houston Section’s Student
Activities Committee has been asked by the
Fort Bend ISD to come back for a third time
to conduct a Teacher In-Service Workshop on
August 18 at Kempner High School on Voss
Road, one block east of Highway 6 (north of
US 59) in Sugar Land.
The Houston Section’s TISP program is
approved by the Texas Education Agency to
grant official continuing education hours to
teachers who attend our program. This
program utilizes lesson plans available at
www.tryengineering.org, a website funded
by IBM to provide resources to teachers,
counselors, students and parents, K – 12,
globally. The lesson plans are available in
7 languages for free download. These lesson
plans are aligned with national standards
for easy adoption by local agencies.
We are looking for volunteers to participate
in this up coming workshop so that they can
provide similar training sessions to other
school district in the territory covered by
the IEEE Houston Section, comprising about
48 counties around Harris County, with about
150 school districts.
This website will have a brochure available
for download, http://www.ieee-houston.org/Committees/SAC/StudentActivitiesCommittee.htm
If you would like to volunteer, please
contact Freddie Wong at

Houston Section visits Region 10
GOLD groups
Download Dec. 2008 Goldrush
Newsletter |

During the 2008 Sections
Congress in Quebec City, Canada,
we had our first GOLD Summit.
Summit Leaders from each region
were teamed up with each other
to come up with some ideas on
how regions could increase
interactions between regions and
sections. I was representing
Region 5, and I was paired up
with Tim Wong from Region 10.
One of the ideas that we came up
with was to try to meet up with
local GOLD groups while we
travel, and as it turned out,
between October to November of
2008, I was about to make a trip
to Malaysia, Singapore and Perth
Australia. This was really a
personal trip, guess there’s
nothing like practicing what we
preached!!

IEEE Houston Section
7th Annual Scholarship Golf
Tournament |
|
On Monday,
November 10, 2008 the IEEE
Houston Section sponsored
our Seventh Annual Scholarship
Golf Tournament held at
Walden on Lake Houston Golf
Club. The proceeds from this
event benefit the IEEE Houston
Section Scholarship Fund.
There were 42 teams and though
the weather was somewhat rainy
from time to time, the golf
combined with the food, fun and
prizes made for a great event.
We
sincerely appreciate our
sponsors and participants who,
once again, made this a
memorable event. We'll
have pictures up on the web
shortly.
Thanks to Gil Dolor for chairing
this year's tourney again and
all those who helped in so many
ways. |
